Well, writing history is learning to convey a narrative, and offer interpretation (put that in italics), not the simple act of collecting numbers, names and dates. That's what makes this book so unbearable. I don't want to know how many horses there were in such city, I want to know about trends, historical processes, consequences… salted with good anecdote.
A competent look at a complex subject, compressed into an hour's read.The presentation becomes a little 'dry' when relating the succession of leaders and wars.Again - one wonders at the rationality of a succession of wars that have been dictated by religion......and the thousands upon thousands of people who have died in needless wars and purges.....
An interesting example of one groups desire for world conquest. The author did a good job of explaning the rise and fall of this group of people. You really have to ask yourself, where are they now?
Good introduction to a great empire. Western history only seems to refer to the Ottoman Empire as some how mysterious. Little discussion of its impact on the world. Let alone it's successes.
This book has succeeded in giving a well written and concise overview of the history of the ottoman empire from the inception until recent times. Excellent read.
Reading any of this book series are well worth your time.
