As I read "Cruising In Seraffyn," I came to appreciate that I was reading an important contribution to the history of recreational sailing. In the late '60's, the Pardeys built the 24 foot sailboat that took them across the world's oceans. Over four decades later, their "go small, go simple, go NOW" motto remains a foundational piece of advice for those considering blue water cruising. While long term cruising on a 24' boat wouldn't work for most (Lin stands 4' 10") the overriding theme that smaller boats can be safe, comfortable and cost effective is valid.Although much has changed in the years since the Pardeys wrote this book, it remains full of time-tested insights, tips and advice borne of hard-won experience. As to the writing, it is impossible not to be swept along by the Pardeys' exuberance which percolates through every page. The photos in this anniversary edition are indeed worth 1,000 words. "Sailing in Seraffyn" will be a welcome addition to the libraries of blue water sailors as well as readers who are considering this lifestyle. Highest possible recommendation.
The Pardeys are well known in the cruising world. They are mostly known for their efficient and economical methods (they didn't even have an engine on Serrafyn). This book gives a great background on how they got started. The original edition of this book was written in the 70s. This new edition adds a section on current (1992) costs to proceed as they did.The book is clear and well written. Throughout the entire book you will be asking yourself, "what am I waiting for? I could be cruising NOW!" While I would agree that it is certainly possible to do as they did, it takes more than the desire to save money. It takes the kind of character many of us don't have (including me). The character of *completely* relying on just the basics. For instance, I could not imagine...for me...having a sailboat without a motor. There is certainly something pure and noble about not having one, but I still feel it is a convenience (and safety feature) I would not want to do without.Above all else is my favorite quote from the Pardeys. When asked how much longer they were going to continue sailing they replied, "As long as it's fun."That's the sort of inspiration we need about all things in life.
Brought this book years ago along with all of theParkey Cruising series but lost them in a move. I purchased these to reread and keep in my library. Lin is one of the best writers of sailing, she tells it like it is in a very interesting way. I now have almost all of her books.
Have the paper book first edition and loved it. This is even better. It's my opinion that the Pardeys really are the best cruising authors. Informative, easy to read, and most certainly enjoyable.
This book is a very good read. I In have been reading their works since 2000 if not before. This book has been split into four works. Cruising the Med, Cruising Europe,Cruising Seraffyn and Seraffyn in the Orient. So need one more volume to get the info I want, their run down the Red Sea. I have many of their hard back books, VHS tapes, DVDs and now ebooks.
Nice, true story about some awesome sailors that built their own boat and sailed around the world!
Another great story from the Pardey family. From my recliner I can join them on this excellent adventure.
As you read this book it seems as though you are right there with Larry and Lin as they build and sail their small boat from California through Mexico, Central America, Jamaica, up the U.S. East Coast to the Chesapeake Bay and finally to Europe. This is the 25th Anniversary edition of this book. It has been updated from the original with pictures and maps. A great book I would recommend it highly for anyone with an adventurous spirit.
