About the Author
Heather Hearn Rathnau graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baylor University with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Pedagogy and Vocal Performance & Literature, respectively. She received numerous scholarships for piano, vocal performance and academics, in addition to a graduate assistantship in accompanying. At Baylor, Heather was a member of several academic honor societies and was also selected for the national music honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda, which recognizes the highest levels of musical achievement and academic scholarship in colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning. The international professional music fraternity, Mu Phi Epsilon, also presented Heather its coveted Sterling Achievement Award as the outstanding senior Mu Phi student in the nation. Heather is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) in Piano and maintains a successful private studio teaching piano and voice. She has directed childrens choirs at her church, and also served as an adjudicator and clinician for childrens choir workshops and seminars on vocal technique. Additionally, she has been guest soloist for the keynote speaker at the Baptist General Convention of Texas and is a former member of the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. Heather is a charter member of the Sugar Land (TX) Choral Society, founded by one of her former students. She is listed in Whos Who in America, 60th Edition and Whos Who of American Women. Heather was named Teacher of the Year at the 2011 Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA) State Convention awarded for the highest service to and representation of TMTA, Music Teachers National Association and the music teaching profession, in addition to an excellent record in the teaching profession. Her students actively participate in the National Federation of Music Clubs Gold Cup Festival and have received numerous awards for music theory, composition, publication and ensemble at TMTA state conventions.

This book is excellent, as are all the levels, to draw the student through the learning process. Music theory is presented in a very organized, step-by-step manner. If the levels are used in order, they review previous lessons and add to them at just the right rate. The primer is perfect for very young, but also special needs children. If the facilitator has no theory knowledge, the answer key will be necessary, as there are no answers in these books. However, no previous knowledge is needed if one procedes systematically through these books. These are perfect for home schooling when no music instructor is available. Availability of a piano is nice, but not required. Ear training is done by accessing on-line videos.
There are a lot of great theory books out there and I have used most of them. This series my students love! It is easy to get my students to do a couple of pages a lesson and often times they will do more during the week. As a teacher I like how the first half of the book is review from the previous book. This works great; if the student understood the book they were working in I skip a level when ordering the next book. On the other hand if my student had difficulties with the information I simply order the next book and we can review the information again before moving into new information. I think the students like the "comics" looking book and the games inside. .
I love these Theory Time workbooks for my kids. Learning music theory is just as important as learning to play the instrument. Things that seem like common sense to adults aren't always common sense to kids. The Theory Time books break music theory down into digestible pieces for kids to understand. They have helped my kids to read music better and reinforce what their violin and cello teachers have been teaching them. I highly recommend these workbooks.
Comprehensive and easy to follow study book for a music theory deficient senior student (66), recommended to me by my professional music (piano) teacher.
