The book is well written, easy to understand, organized and consistent thoughts. It rightfully makes the reader at least think about things as . . . is "the way we have always done it" necessarily the Biblical or Christ-like way, or is it in fact very sinful?! I would recommend the book for pastors and church officers; those who have the most moving-and-shaking clout to implement changes - or keep things the same. I do not mean this as a 100% endorsement of everything Myers says. And Myers does give credit; if you and/or your church do things the Christlike way and with Christlike motives, Myers does not expect you to apologize nor take his book as proof that you are not.
I have often thought on the church and how its acceptance of corporate methods and assimilation of cultural media mores taints its mission but Jeremy Myers eloquently captures in words the true crux of the matter -- that the church is not a social club for do-gooders but to disseminate the good news to all the nooks and crannies in the world and particularly and primarily those bastions in the reign of evil. That the "gates of Hell" Jesus pronounces indicate that the church is a offensive, not defensive, posture as gates are defensive structures.I must confess that in reading I was inclined to be in agreement as many of the same thinkers that Myers riffs upon have influenced me also -- Walter Wink, Robert Farrar Capon, Greg Boyd, NT Wright, etc.... So as I read, I frequently nodded my head in agreement. It is not a long book -- not sure how many printed pages this digital work would amount to, but it is a breezy read.
This book approach is realistic, and long over due.. for what I think needs to happen. Pastors should have a read of this.
Absolutely phenomenal. Unless we let go of everything Adamic in our nature, we cannot embrace anything Christlike. For the church to die, we the individual temples must dig our graves. It is a must read for all who take issues about the body of Christ seriously.
This book puts to words how I feel the church has gone and needs to go ( die) in order to get back to its first love, Jesus. The church nowadays is more about programs than it is about the Prince of Peace.
Jeremy Myers has written a most thought provoking book which will challenge the reader to think outside the theological box constructed by the western Christian church. In his book "The Death and Resurection of the Church" Jeremy asks you to examine many dogmatic functions of western american churches. Why does the church do it that way? Is that pleasing to God? Does your church serve God? As I devoured this book I felt consistantly challenged to look at what "church" is, and what it means to me and america. Every Christian needs to read this book and examine their heart as to what their participation in "church" really means to them.I first became aware of Jeremy Myers writings through his blog "Till He Comes". Jeremy is an active faithful blogger with a large following. His blog posts never fail to stimulate thought. Since I have found Jeremy's blog I have not failed to check in weekly to see the latest topic of interest. Do yourself a favor, read Jeremy's blog, and read this book. It could change your life!
I found this book both challenging to read and affirming. I believe in the spiritual concept about synchronicity; which is that ‘Truth’ rises in many places at once. God gets the message out through many channels. That is a fitting metaphor for me to use; Jeremy Myers operates on a different channel than I do. I would never use the same language, or use the same ideas to support my thinking; but the truth is that my conclusions and his closely match which is why I enjoyed reading the book.I can talk about where we are in alignment. I believe that predominately our current churches are not operating in the way Jesus prescribed. I don’t think we are using methods and actions that will create the Kingdom of God. I also expect that it might best serve us to let churches ‘die’ when they are not authentic, beloved, loving, embracing communities of faith. Myers calls this form of church Satanic. Ouch, definitely not the channel that I use at all. “While the church is supposed to be salt and light, a city on a hill, leading the world towards righteousness and justice, we have far too often allowed the world to influence and mold us into its pattern—the pattern of the devil. The world has done to the church what the church must do to the world.†p.10. Myers talks about how the church has misused power and turned it into being about control. While I would never use the terminology of satanic, I would say that we have lost our way—and I think we mean the same thing. In my work I say that we are using man-made, top-down thinking, patterns and beliefs. I agree with Jeremy Myers that we have “too often allowed the world to influence and mold us into its patternâ€. We are operating with the current cultural systems and not authentically those of Jesus.Systems thinking is the core of my own work, and when you talk about intervening in a system there is discussion about the possibility of changing existing systems or if you have to start over and create entirely new systems. Myers is calling for church to die. I have a feeling that in many cases, the best thing is going to be to let many of them die. What I expect will happen is that the death of church is going to take place on a case-by-case basis where some will be able to shift their systems and other will not be able to make the transformation.I was in agreement and enjoyed that Myers helped us to see what are right and wrong questions for a church to be asking; Wrong questions: How do we increase donations? How do we gain the ear of the governor? How do we get to be the biggest? How do we get recognition? Right questions: What is church? How do we act and live like Jesus? What do we do with our money, time and resources? What is our place in politics and society?I appreciate that Jeremy points to who we should be in the world. We have the capacity to follow the example of Jesus and live like this. “So what drew people to Jesus? It was His love and acceptance, His identification with their pain, and His willingness to go to where they were and be with them. Such things are central to the incarnation of Jesus. With Jesus, there were no outcasts, no rejects. He never turned anybody away. He loved, accepted, and forgave everybody. He judged and condemned no one, unless it was the religious elite who had already rejected Him.†p. 58I was very glad to read this book and stretch myself to read past language that I would never use and instead see a message that matches my own. That is what both of us are trying to teach, that we can treat each other with compassion and grace to see our commonality. Jeremy and I both see that we are currently in a time where we are facing the death and resurrection of church. The main point for me is that there will be a resurrection!
