About the Author
Joseph U. "Butch" Pierre Jr. was a prep All-American at St. Amant High School in Louisiana and a four-year starting point guard at Mississippi State University where he stayed on as a graduate assistant, thus beginning his journey as one of the most successful assistant basketball coaches in the country. After attaining a master's degree in education from his alma mater, Butch coached at Kentucky State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina State University, the University of Memphis, Louisiana State University, and Oklahoma State University. As associate head coach at both LSU and OSU, his teams went to the NCAA tournament, advancing to the Final Four and the second round, respectively. He also served as interim head coach at LSU, only the 19th man to hold that position in a hundred years. Butch has coached Division I & II basketball in the Sun Belt Conference, Conference USA, the ACC, the SEC, and the Big 12. His coaching journey from the lower levels to the Power 5 conferences prepared him with the insights he shares in this book. Known as one of the most successful recruiters in the country, Butch excelled in rebuilding, with an eye for talent and a knack for turning losing programs into winners: 15 post-season appearances and many conference championships. Throughout his career, Butch has advised and mentored student-athletes to achieve greatness in both the classroom and on the court, emphasizing education and a college degree while still helping many of his players reach their goal of playing in the NBA. Whether naturally gifted or in need of nurture and development, Coach Pierre did whatever it took to set his players on the right path. Butch recruited and coached five NBA lottery picks who became instant millionaires, as well as many others who went on to play professionally. Coach has great advice and knows what he’s talking aboutBuy for every young person!
This is an excellent book for coaches, parents, and children of all ages. Coach Pierre has an undergraduate and Master's degree from Mississippi State University in education. He also was a head and assistant head basketball coach at major universities to include Louisiana State University, Oklahoma State University, and North Carolina State University. In his book his personal experience and life lessons are invaluable for coaches, parents and children whether the child is in sports, music, and/or education. I read the book and could not put down until I completed the whole book. I have bought the book for my grandson's in Alaska because the life lessons of success and failure are important for each person who reads the book. Again the book is an incredible and real autobiographic experience of Coach Pierre and all of us will learn from his life experiences. I highly recommend the book.
Growing Up Great is well worth reading. It's real life not glossing over anything. The world of sports is rough and tumble but sometimes what happens in life is even more so and Coach Pierre doesn't sugarcoat it. From a burning cross on his front lawn when he was a child to the injuries that hobbled his promising career in college and the NBA he helps people of all ages and stations in life learn how to deal with it and come out stronger because of the circumstances. If I was an aspiring athkete or parent of one, if I was a coach, I would make this required reading!
Receieved his book the other day and couldn't put it down. It demonstrates the main focus in becoming a successful person.
What a fantastic read! Whether you are a coach, parent, player or child, "Growing Up Great" is an excellent read for all! Coach Pierre's life lessons as a player, coach and father are timeless for all generations and a motivator for us all to step up our game and ensure our children grow in love, discipline and excellence!
Every spare moment I've had since I received this book, I've been curled up with it. I will definitely have to read this one at least twice! This is one of those that you hate to finish! GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
