Amazon.com Review

With his collection of personal vignettes, I Want More, Iggy Pop gives us a highly charged and stylized view into one of rock music's more colorful and important characters. Ranging from a few terse paragraphs to several pages, the book's sections chronicle the patchwork of Iggy's early life, following Jimmy Osterberg as he makes the complete transformation into Iggy Pop. While detailing the escapades in his life and career up to the 80s, Iggy's nakedly autobiographical style bridges the public view of the rock innovator (first famous for rolling in glass onstage) with the private man from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who swore that "I will not let myself disappear." We see Iggy high on coke, stabbing himself with drumsticks, and living through what most people can only read about. But by the end of the book, Iggy has become more than a punk rock icon; he has become a real person with a tangible history. The anecdotes and philosophical musings in I Need More are surrounded by a wide variety of black-and-white photographs as well as lyrics from songs written throughout Iggy's rise to international stardom. The photos are diverse, with baby photos of Jimmy Osterberg and Iggy's first bands, The Iguanas and The Prime Movers, set next to ones taken during Stooges years and during Pop's collaborations with David Bowie. Many of the photos are live and candid, though there are also a number of professional rock portraits familiar to Rolling Stone readers. I Need More provides an open, honest view into one musician's life at the beginning of the punk rock movement, a musical and political period both inspired and influenced by Iggy and his best band, The Stooges. The book's raw prose manages to capture the excess and power that marked punk rock's rebellion against the establishment, drove the Stooges' sound, and propelled the man and the band to a rock-and-roll recklessness that had been lost in popular music.

I give 5 stars because I just love this guy. He's so down to earth, yet deliciously odd. It's an easy read, that's for sure. Don't go in looking to critique his writing style. I'm sure it was written this way to create a conversational feel, and it does. It reads a little choppy and random, but so be it. It's fun. Great pictures too! Didn't expect the nude one, but not complaining either. If you're a fan, this book is a great collection piece!

If you want a transcript of an interesting cat talking into a tape recorder for a few hours, check this out. Practically no information of interest or entertainment to be had here. Just an extension of style far, far better served by listening to the great music he's produced over the years. Stick to that unless you want a graphically puffed up magazine article, as presented in this "book".

This autobiography is just amazing! Everything about it makes me want to read it over and over! From Iggy being arrested for murder, to his imaginary friend during his childhood. This book does not only capture the true meaning of Iggy's music, it reveals what Iggy is all about. Behind the pencil stabbings, the swearing, and the shirtless "idiot" from Detroit, is a simple man that believes the American Music Industry needs a Union. (Not surprised by this, he came from the capitol of UAW.) Most of the pictures take you into his childhood, his music, and his concerts. (The nude picture is the only picture I can't stand.) Many artists are considered to have "sold out" when they write autobiographies, all Iggy Pop had to do was find his diary.

I've got a lotta love, respect, and admiration for a man who keeps rockin' well into his 50's!!! Thank god some people never grow up! Here is the man who fronted the Stooges, pretty much the inspiration for the NY Dolls, the Dead Boys, and much of the punk movement which started during the mid 1970's. Unfortunately the music industry didn't know what to do with the Stooges in 1969, when they released their first album. If you're a Stooges fan, of course you already know that. Iggy is the godfather of punk. If you haven't already read this book, GET IT NOW. It's a must have for any Stooges/Iggy fan. Iggy starts with his life in the trailor park, becoming a crazy rock'n'roller, gigging with the MC5, working with Bowie. Hey, I didn't know Iggy had Nico living with him! The best thing about this book is it's Iggy in his own words. He's a funny guy! His life with and without the Stooges is definitely entertaining, to say the least! Great read!

If you are an Iggy Pop fan and haven't read this yet, or if you have an affinity for the story behind the Rock 'N' Roll icon himself, this is a great book to pick up. Actually, it is even possible that this is one of THE essential Iggy Pop books to own if you consider yourself a true fan of this living legend. If you come from a younger generation that can appreciate the pertinent contributions to Rock N' Roll that Iggy Pop has made, this can serve as an interesting yet eloquently presented history lesson from the man who lived it. It could be argued that without the contributions made by Iggy Pop and his seminal band, The Stooges, the proverbial balls of Rock 'N' Roll would most likely be considerably smaller. The world is in extremely limited supply of individuals like Iggy Pop. A person would be hard pressed to find another soul wandering this mortal coil with the beautifully dangerous blend of creativity, chutzpah, audacity, volatility, raw talent, resilience, and sheer staying power Iggy has exhibited for decades, time after time. Like books written about many other uniquely influential music pioneers and innovators, there have been several books published over the years about Iggy Pop. A small handful serve some sort of redeeming purposes here and there, but it usually turns out that most of them leave much to be desired. "I Need More" stands alone as one of the most interesting books of it's kind, making it a pleasure to read, and then read again. It isn't the typical autobiography that ultimately turns into a self-indulgent abstract portrait painted by an artist strictly for the purpose of attempting to display their "artistic" merits while exposing their "tortured" and/or "venerable" sides. "I Need More" gives you stories that have potential to let you in on some unspoken secrets that might not have been revealed otherwise. The level of knowledge I already had about Iggy and his musical background, the forming and rearranging line-up of The Stooges, the different incarnations of different band line-ups, was already pretty extensive. After reading "I Need More", however, - while it is not really completely about the Stooges per se - there was a fresh, bright, gleaming, welcome new light shed on many different aspects of Iggy's life that broke away from the typical stories Rock 'N' Roll stars tell that inundate the typical Rock 'N' Roll biographies. It effortlessly retains the reader's interest as Iggy hares tales of his childhood, his family, dubious interactions with military personnel, first meetings with integral characters in his career, bizarre interactions with executives, and so much more with unflinching candor. Thank you kindly for the breath of fresh air, Mr. Osterberg! "I Need More" is primarily presented from a first-person perspective. This allows the reader to feel privy to an entertaining simulated one-on-one sit down with Iggy himself. That is the real charm of this book, which is an extremely easy read for this very same reason. Now, if you are merely the casual "fan" who doesn't go beyond the superficiality of a "cool tune" like "Search & Destroy", this book may not be for you. On the other hand, if you truly care about the makings of Rock 'N' Roll royalty and find interest in the circumstances of the life of an Ann Arbor, MI trailer park kid that culminated into the making of a true living legend, as I do, make a little room on you bookshelf and add "I Need More" to your library. Remember, once again, this is a repeat reader.

First off, I can't think of anybody in modern music more influenial than James Jewel Osterberg, a.k.a. Iggy Pop. His hugely influential and energetic music and charismatic stage presence have made him a truly sublime entertainer. This book is presented in first person form, like an interview, and in it, Iggy discusses everything from his humble beginnings in an Ann Arbor trailer park to his days as the Stooges frontman to his infamous drug addiction in the mid-1970's to his relationship with David Bowie and his late-70s comeback as a solo artist. Fascinating stuff from one of rock music's most well-traveled characters.
