I really enjoyed some aspects of this book. The writing style flowed easily with a barrage of well developed characters. Unlike other books, the characters were so uniquely portrayed it wasn't hard to remember each one- unlike other books where it takes half the book to distinguish one from another. The emotions & settings were so true to life, so visceral, so real that you are completely drawn into the book with it's colorful characters and beautiful land and seascapes. The plotline is compelling but without the above components would have been too long and drawn out. I feel this book could've been condensed by at least a third. At one point towards the end I was tempted to skip over the last couple chapters (which I NEVER do) because the plot kept zig-zagging so much, I became weary and impatient and really didn't care who the guilty person was.So overall, it had some exellent qualities which can't be discounted, but author could have tied things up simpler w/out the long drawn out circular guessing game at the end.
Fantastic, quick-paced murder mystery filled with rich, complex characters who engender both sympathy and anger. This book explores the complicated relationships between three women who have been friends for decades (sort of) in a way that is realistic, sad, funny, and entertaining. Highly recommend!
Awesome, totally gripping thriller and ethics tale. Not only because of the page-turning storyline, but because this book about Dartmouth (I graduated from Harvard myself like the author, but grew up in Hanover, NH, where both of my parents were Dartmouth professors. Throughout my adolescent years, I spent time with carbon copies of all the characters in Ms. Campbell's novel: the rich bitches, the snooty but sex-crazed frat boys, the druggies and the suicidal basket cases. The book is about Dartmouth, under the pseudonym of a fictional, New Hampshire Ivy League called Carlisle).It's a true-to-life tale of Dartmouth College, and I laughed, cried and said "go figure" all the way through it's 400 pages. It also reminded me of the many reasons this particular Hanover "townie" elected to attend college elsewhere. Ms. Campbell explores the real unhappiness and sickness that hides inside many pretty, shiny, fast-talking sorority girls, without restraint. Young women setting out to start college would do well to read this book, disturbing as some parts may be. The harsh, realistic picture the story paints could very well save these young women from making a deal with the devil...one that is hard if not I'm possible to back out of.A must-read, hard-hitting and un-put-downable.
Wow! Just finished this novel and wow again. Others have given you a brief plot synopsis so I'll skip that part. This is a character driven suspense of multi-faceted, well drawn out characters, that kept me guessing right up to the end. As soon as I assumed I had a handle on each character, puzzled out the question of "Who dun-it" and made a firm decision, Ms. Campbell added another insight into the characters' behaviors and motives plus handed me a plot twist that upended that decision. I love that! And after all that puzzling, the actual person who-dun-it took me by complete surprise. I give this book 5 stars and recommend it highly.
I enjoyed the book. Never read this author before but she kept the story moving. The ending was a surprise.
This is a fun read, not too dark, but with enough emotional tangles to lead you on a ride. Kept me guessing about who the killer would turn out to be. There were a few places where the friendships didn't feel completely believable, but more that did.
I got this title off of a booklist (that I can't remember) and is definitely a great read. Reminds me a little of Noah Hawley's, "Before the Fall", in its complex storyline and realistic characters. College town, college friends, complex relationships, this book has them. A great whodunit book!
I struggled to get into this book. Even though the second half was an improvement on the first half of the story, it wasn’t enough to resurrect the tale. At the heart of this story are three women, from different backgrounds, Kate, Jenny and Aubrey and none were likeable. Their so-called close friendship was shallow and destructive. Definitely not a page turner, nor a thriller, I’m surprised this work was punted as such.
