This book is truly a wonderful example of cultural barriers and devides being broken down! I went into the book with all my preconceived notions and beliefs about North Korea that probably many people share. I was so intrigued by these stories of how the author (an American) and other participating cultures, was able to find ways to reach North Koreans and build relationships with many. The brief history of the country was really appreciated, as I was not aware of how the north and the south came to be separated.I would highly recommend this book, especially in light of all that is going on with North Korea today, as a way of learning more about this mysterious County. The approach of the author and his team members, with regards to cultural respect and seeking ways to understand the people and “get to the edge of the boxâ€, seem to serve as an example of how to approach a culture that we may not understand. I also really appreciated the unbiased and neutral tone with which this book was written!
I'm a Ph. D. student who studies International Relations in the States. Born and raised up in South Korea, I was never given a chance to enter NK, much less have a personal contact with people there. Leafing through the pages, I felt like watching the author and NK people surf at the coast, hearing them laugh, giggle, and chat together alongside. Amidst the unexpected turnaround going on surrounding the Peninsula, how to engage North Korea and its people especially on the ground level should be a critical task(or mission for those faith-based organizations) that necessitates prudence and caution in terms of daily practices. As a man of refined sensibilities for culture- and a seasoned practitioner in humanitarian works as well- the author shows how a small creativity of using surfing as a tool for bringing together different groups of people, if not enemies, could make possibly seismic impacts not only on the hearts of locals and their American "friends" but also on the process of peaceful reconciliation in a way that had never been imagined before. I highly recommend this for those studying or interested in ethics in humanitarianism, transnational engagement, or FBOs in international relations.
Surfing North Korea is very different from books I’ve read about North Korea.It’s not depressing or down cast, rather it’s hopeful, inspiring and encouraging.I enjoyed the author’s sense of humor, and was deeply touched by him and his team members genuinely caring for people in North Korea. Also, it was so neat to see pictures that went with the stories. After reading this book, I found myself thinking on how can I engage with others where I am now, and it helped me to develop genuine prayers for North Korea. This book has opened my eyes and heart to the people of North Korea.
This book is a must read. Easily understandable, fun, enjoyable. I couldn't put it down. Gives one a completely different viewpoint of North Korea or even a viewpoint at all. I would love to visit North Korea. Get a copy of this book and have yourself a very educational and enjoyable read about a country many of us don't really know anything about.
I feel like I was traveling with Gabe inside of North Korea while reading this book. As being a South Korean, I was growing up with limited info and concepts about North Korean and did not have any idea who they are.But I was tearing whenever I read the moments when North korean opened their heart to the tour group. I realized that all People are equal, and basically same regardless of their ideology and belief.I truly believe that his team’s humantarian works, surfing camp in NK already made a huge change in North Korean lives and it influenced the relationship between South and North Korea. Gabe’s journey brings us a thought how to care about the unreached people. We can make a choice how to live, either staying the present or expanding to make a difference for the future.
I read Surfing North Korea after a friend recommended it and I really enjoyed it. I learned so much about the culture, what it’s like inside this mysterious country that so many of us have wanted to know. I felt I was along for the ride and actually found myself wanting to be a part of such a great humanitarian effort. The children of North Korea are no different in heart then children everywhere who want new experiences such as blowing bubbles and surfing some waves.Gabe has brought the darkness of North Korea into a very interesting light that would make many want to visit this secretive place.
I've very much enjoyed reading Gabe's book. In this day and age trusting what you hear on the news is a complete misnomer. Reading about an individual's personal experience means much more to me and gives me a perspective that you just can't find anywhere else. As I'm reading this book I'm feeling like I'm along for the journey and I really enjoyed tagging along! Thanks Gabe Segoine for your insight and sharing your experiences inside North Korea!
I found this book to be very insightful about life in North Korea. It shows how important the NGOs are in opening up communications with ordinary people and business. Using a sport like surfing helps open doors that give ordinary people insight to the outside world, even if it is somewhat limited. The author clearly understands that all interaction is controlled by the government and is orchestrated through official tours. But a consistent approach yields many small opportunities for greater freedom and interaction with the people. This book gives a view of North Korea from the inside in contrast to the external politics one normally finds in the news.
