I read Spanish at an advanced high school level, though I have great difficulty verbally, speaking and understanding. I read the newspaper daily and the occasional novel. I found the website first and have used the concepts a number of times to decipher words I might have looked up before. Many of them, I can use this technique instead and I retain the new vocabulary a little better. I bought the book, but for one reason or another I don't bother with it. Much easier to quickly call up the website since what I'm reading is probably already on the computer.
I've tried to learn a few languages, but only remembered the vocabulary through a lot of rote memorization. I bought this book expecting that the stories behind each word would make it simple to remember lots of vocabulary. And that's what's happened - just reading it through, my mind absorbed all the stories and it's definitely helped me improve my Spanish vocabulary, while being really enjoyable to learn about the fun histories of so many words.
I learned Spanish when I was 24, after having studied both French and German for several years. One of the things that helped me at the time was recognizing the shifts between French (and Latin) and Spanish. However, this was on a very superficial level and I never fully understood why the shifts were there. I also enjoyed the deeper dive into the shifts between German and Latin as they sprung off from PIE. This is a delightful book for all logophiles and will hopefully sate some of your curiousities, as it did mine.
I've been learning and speaking Spanish for years but I never understood how the language really worked or where the words come from. This is why this book was just awesome. It tells you the fun story behind each word and these stories make it super easy to remember everything. And on top of that, it's much more fun than the usual books that drone on with their fake conversations. Two thumbs up, for both beginners and advanced students.
