Another awesome read by this author, enjoyed the characters and storyline. Not a big fan of historical books, but love this author style of story telling.
A fascinating story set in 1920's Britain. I loved reading about Evie and the wonderful world of British upper class drama and intrigue. Murder plots, class distinctions, and greed lead to an interesting mystery with delightful characters.
Fun little mystery, especially if you enjoy the time period.
I love to read how the idle rich lived in the early 20th century in England and the United States. The differences between the classes and how they adjusted to the changes life brings has always fascinated me.
Didn’t enjoy the plot or the writing. Found it very weak. The conversations were hard to believe.
Enjoyed this book. Liked the characters and looking forward to reading the next one and the author's other series as well
I've read thousands of murder mysteries over the years. Now that I'm retired, I read at least one a day, sometimes two. That's why I love Kindle Unlimited!!! With the advent of the Kindle press as well, almost anyone can write the novel they've always felt destined to write, so there's reading material aplenty, and I enjoy seeing what everyone out there can do. So far I've been impressed. For a first of series, I found this tale very readable: I'd certainly read another. I can be picky, too. Picky about sentence structure, about vocabulary, cadence, even about connotation vs denotation in word choice, and I raise an eyebrow when I sense the presence of a thesaurus. The genuineness of the characters can pull me in or put me off. So I'm not easy to please, and I'm perfectly happy leaving off in the middle if I'm not satisfied. I read this book, cover to cover, in a few hours. The mystery itself was a little confusing, so I dropped a point, but having tried the venture myself (The Morbihan Custis Mysteries), I know how difficult plotting them out can be and how completely taken up by the various relationships one can get. The people in your head can get so real, the "who-dunnit" part of the process can definitely suffer. Humans, including authors, are, after all, social animals: we get nosey about what others are doing. Since there are only just so many ways to murder someone and just so many reasons why one might, I tend to think of the "murder" part of the tale as just the glue that binds the story about the people together. Sort of like that little bit of "cake" that holds all the fruit and nuts in a fruitcake together—I happen to be one of the few people in the world who likes it.I especially enjoyed the mysterious male lead and his relationship with the female protagonist. The author has cleverly given hints as to his history while leaving us mostly in the dark. Even by the final chapter, we're still not quite certain what he's all about, which is nice. It's definitely a good lead-in for the next story. The venue is pleasantly "Agatha," the classic country house estate of a Duke and its guests and inhabitants. I did find some of the background characters a little sketchy, not quite able to keep their personalities clearly in my head from one chapter to the next--maybe I'm just getting old. I especially enjoyed the character of the Dowager Duchess. I hope she's in the next novels as well. She's so outrageous and unpredictable. At times I felt like she was "evil" and “mean†and at others that she was either "demented" or "eccentric." It'll be fun to find out which.Althogether a good first mystery.
Needs the hand of a better editor. Transitions are awkward. They are called to dinner, then out of the blue they are drinking tea and eating sandwiches. Someone obviously ordered the food, so why didn't the cook ask about dinner then? Dinner is awkwardly dealt with three pages later. Not a single character had a physical description. Resolve was thin, no real clues or evidence turned up by the sleuths, just conjecture. Liked the storyline and the characters. Has potential. Needs work.
