This is a reprint of a house catalog from Dover. I normally love these, but this one is not as good as some. First, it includes many types of plans. There are bungalows, four-squares, large Victorians, cottages, small Victorians, double houses, rowhouses, stores with living quarters above, stables, houses with no bathrooms, even a house with no kitchen. For many of the facades there are several plans with your choice of options.What I don't like about this book, which led me to giving it only three stars... 1) The blueprints are tiny and hard to read. I'm reading it on the Kindle app of my iPad. Even with being able to zoom in, the blueprints are hard to read. 2) The book is confusing. The blueprints and the drawings of the facades are all over the place. Sometimes there are blueprints that aren't with the drawing of the house, and some don't seem to go with any of the drawings. I spend too much time flipping around trying to find which plans go with which exterior. The text is fun in a quirky way. The author of this catalog certainly was not a humble. modest person. If Dover didn't have a host of other similar old house catalogs I would be more willing to deal with this book, but since there are so many, my advice would be to skip this one.
This is an architectural pattern book like no other. Its author, as the title suggests, provides drawings of at least 1,000 houses. The drawings are small and difficult to read, most often consisting of a floor plan and elevation. Many of the plans are used over and over again in various stylistic guises. It appears that the oriignal purpose of the book was not as typical nineteenth-century pattern books which were intended to provide a builder with all the essential informaiton to construct a house, but as a catalog of designs for contractors and builders to order complete sets of drawings from Mr. Chivers. If one is interested in architectural pattern books as a historic publishing type, then this book fills in a small gap in the panoply of books. If one is interested in turn of the twentieth century residential architecture then this is of moderate interest. There are many better books on the market, both reprinted and current architectural histories.
I returned this book. This edition has reduced all the pages and printed them 4 to a page. The paper is very low quality and the images and text are very small. For me the whole purpose of this book is to enjoy the drawings and floor plans which are nearly indecipherable at the size they are printed here.
It is the floor plans of one house designer. It is not detailed. It shows off his work in a very general way, it's a look book, with a few notes from him. Knowing will save a lot of disappointment. I loved it for what it is.
We have an old Victorian House and we were trying to get some ideas on how it may have originally looked. This book was great with lots of ideas for us to use.
Another classic houseplan collection from Dover. Some of the elevations and floor plans were printed on different pages, which made things a little confusing, but otherwise a great book of plans.
The book is filled with floorplans which also give the room sizes! I love it. The plans offer a wide variety of homes and other Victorian buildings. I recommend this for anyone who really loves Victorian homes and wants to know more about them.
A pot of tea, a mystery cozy and a book about Victorian house plans - what fun.The letters to the architect and other comments about the plans from customers are enjoyable.If you are into old houses, fixing up or touring, I recommend this as guide to enjoy both.
